Sacrificing Ethereum’s values for mainstream adoption must stop now: Buterin

-

The core values of the Ethereum ecosystem – decentralization, privacy and self-sovereignty – have been sacrificed within the pursuit of widespread adoption, and this trend have to be stopped now, said Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.

“2026 is the yr by which we regain lost ground when it comes to self-sovereignty and lack of trust,” Buterin posted on X on Friday:

“No more in 2026. Every compromise on values that Ethereum has made to this point – every moment where you could have thought it was really price diluting ourselves a lot within the name of mainstream adoption – we aren’t any longer making that compromise.”

To reverse this trend, Buterin desires to see improved private payments and lower the barrier to entry for users to run full nodes and decentralized apps that don't run on central servers.

He also wants users to more easily take control of their on-chain data and see improved social recovery wallets that protect funds if seed phrases are lost or extracted by an attacker.

“In lots of these areas, now we have seen serious regression in Ethereum during the last decade,” Buterin said. “Nodes have evolved from easy to operate to difficult to operate. Dapps have evolved from static sites to complicated behemoths that pass all of your data to a dozen servers.”

Buterin said upcoming upgrades, including the Kohaku release and the Glamsterdam fork, are expected to handle a few of these issues.

“It might be an extended road […] But it can make Ethereum an ecosystem worthy of not only its current place within the universe, but a much larger one.”

Buterin wants Ethereum to be self-sustaining

Buterin said earlier this week that Ethereum must pass the “walkaway test,” meaning Ethereum will turn out to be self-sustaining in the approaching many years without developer influence.

“We should strive to say as quickly as possible that the Ethereum protocol because it stands today is cryptographically secure for 100 years,” he said.

Quantum resistance features, a more scalable architecture and a greater block formation model that may withstand centralization pressure were amongst the important thing improvements. According to Buterin, Ethereum must stand the test of time.

Buterin also wants more decentralized stablecoin innovation

Buterin also called for higher decentralized stablecoins on Ethereum to offer people true independence from governments and the standard economic system.

He proposed a stablecoin backed by a diversified basket of assets and currencies, relatively than relying solely on a currency just like the US dollar, in order that its stability doesn’t rely upon a single nation.
