Polygon boss says he “questioned his loyalty to Ethereum.”

-

Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon, has criticized Ethereum executives for rejecting Polygon's status as a real Layer 2 Ethereum – pointing to the contributions Polygon has made to Ethereum, although these efforts receive little recognition.

Nailwal, who also serves as CEO of the Polygon Foundation, said he’s now “questioning his loyalty” to Ethereum — particularly the Ethereum Foundation and the community, which he said has not given Polygon direct support.

“In fact, the alternative is true,” Nailwal said in a post on Monday

“The Ethereum community as a complete has been a shitshow for quite a while,” Nailwal said, adding that “the Ethereum community must take a tough have a look at itself.”

His post later sparked a response from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who made some extent of recognizing Polygon's achievements within the broader Ethereum community.

Nailwal just isn’t the one industry leader to have leveled strong criticism on the EF, which has undergone a serious leadership overhaul over the past 12 months.

Nailwal cited a post by former EF researcher Péter Szilágyi, who shared an 18-month-old letter expressing frustration together with his old job, while Eric Conner, one in every of Ethereum's first developers, left in January, citing concerns about Buterin's leadership decisions.

He received some support, including from Solana co-founder Raj Gokal and former Solana Foundation strategy director Austin Federa, each of whom suggested that Polygon “collaborate” with Solana, or develop into a Layer 2 on the Ethereum competitive network.

Vitalik Buterin praises Polygon and Nailwal

Responding to Nailwal's post, Buterin acknowledged Polygon's contributions to Ethereum, noting that the corporate hosts the biggest market prediction platform in Polymarket and has advanced zk-EVM technology, amongst other features.

Buterin also praised Nailwal's personal efforts at CryptoRelief, which has funded biomedical infrastructure and research in India.

In Vitalik's book, Polygon remains to be not Ethereum Layer 2

However, Buterin identified that Polygon doesn’t have a proof system in place to acquire the total security guarantees that Ethereum Layer 2 is meant to supply, in response to Nailwal's claim that Polygon just isn’t being treated as such.

He noted that Polygon could easily “buy an off-the-shelf ZK tech stack” that may enable a proof system, adding that the technology has “got pretty good” and proof costs at the moment are as little as $0.0001 per transaction.

Nailwal has not responded to Buterin's comments.
