Neighbors in North Tonawanda Disturbed by Noise and Environmental Impact of Crypto Mining Operation
Residents in North Tonawanda, N.Y. are speaking out against the Digihost crypto mining operation in their neighborhood, citing constant noise and environmental concerns. The plant, which uses powerful computers to mine digital currency, has been likened to living next to a busy airport or Niagara Falls.
Mark Polito, a resident in the area, described the noise as unbearable, preventing him and his guests from enjoying time outside and even penetrating the walls of his home. Environmental activists have raised additional concerns about the plant’s greenhouse gas emissions, which they say have skyrocketed since Digihost took over the facility from Fortistar.
The North Tonawanda Climate Smart Task Force Chair, Deborah Gondek, criticized the company for its environmental impact, stating that the greenhouse gas emissions from the plant are in direct conflict with New York State’s climate goals. Despite a moratorium on renewing permits for crypto mining operations, Digihost has been allowed to operate under an expired permit due to the previous owner’s application.
Environmentalists are calling on the Department of Environmental Conservation to take action and reject Digihost’s permit application. The city administration is also exploring options to shut down the operation, including a proposed moratorium and a public meeting scheduled for next month.
Residents are urging for immediate action, with Polito challenging skeptics to visit his home at midnight to experience the noise firsthand. The DEC has stated that it is still reviewing the permit application and will consider its compliance with the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.
As the debate continues, residents are left to contend with the constant noise and environmental concerns brought on by the Digihost crypto mining operation in their community.
