A current proposal that goals to vary Bitcoin's base unit to grasp the understanding as a payment instrument has come across opposition. Critics say that Bitcoins Satoshis are not any more confusing than the cent of the dollar.
The Bitcoin developer John Carvalho introduced Bitcoin Improvement Proposal-177 on April 23, which tries to eliminate the concept of Satoshis, of which there are 100,000,000 in 1 Bitcoin (BTC), and shared Bitcoin by the fixed supply of Bitcoin of 21 million in 21 folk units.
This is followed by a proposal by Bitcoin Developer Jimmy Song from 2017 to create “Bits” that represent a millionth of 1 Bitcoin. However, Carvalho said that songs would still require Bitcoin users to take into consideration decimal positions and “postpone the complexity as a substitute of eliminating it”.
Jack Dorsey, CEO of Block Inc., is one among those that call for the change and says in a post dated May 18 that Satoshis or Sats are too confusing for newcomers.
“Bitcoin parts are higher and only Bitcoin is best,” said Dorsey.
Dorsey identified a discussion in December 2024 in regards to the topic through which Stevie Lee, product manager of the Bitcoin infrastructure company Spiral, argued that there was no need for people or handle what Satoshis are.
“Everyone knows Bitcoin, no person knows Sats, people just need to send and receive Bitcoin,” said Lee, remembering past conversations through which people thought that Satoshis was a totally latest token that had no Bitcoin.
He added that the Bitcoin community mustn’t be too concerned with the change, since they know that the underlying economy of Bitcoin would remain intact.
Cory Klipsten, CEO by Swan Bitcoin, and the Byte Federal Director of Michelle Weekley were amongst those that leaned against the change.
“People understand cent in a single dollar, they may understand Sats in a Bitcoin,” said Weekley on X.
Magdalena Gronowska, a self-described Bitcoin consultant, claimed that the change could consider some those that Bitcoin has crashed abruptly against the present price of around $ 100,000 and that the “offer was massively inflated”.

Bitcoin creator was open to the concept
Robin Linus, the Creator of Bitcoin Virtual Machine (BitVM), emphasized that even bitcoins pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto was open, because the units of Bitcoin are displayed for user -friendliness.
“If it gets tedious to work with small numbers, we could change where the display shows the decimal point,” said Satoshi in a contribution in February 2010 before disappearing the next 12 months.
“The same amount of cash, just one other convention,” added Satoshi.

The Bitcoin network has not implemented any suggestions for improvement in November 2021 for the reason that Taproot upgrade that aimed to enhance the speed, efficiency and privacy of Bitcoin.
