Crusoe Energy Shifts Focus from Bitcoin Mining to Artificial Intelligence

Crusoe Energy, a United States-based Bitcoin miner, is wrapping up its Bitcoin mining business because it plans to shift its focus towards the factitious intelligence sector.

New York Digital Investment Group Acquires Crusoe’s Bitcoin Mining Operation

According to a recent press release, Crusoe will sell 425 of its modular data centers, spanning sites across eight states and Argentina, with a combined 270 megawatts of power generation capability, to New York Digital Investment Group (NYDIG). The deal also includes Crusoe’s Digital Flare Mitigation business, and around 135 employees will transition to NYDIG.

NYDIG’s Plan for the Acquisition

NYDIG plans to proceed operating and investing within the newly acquired business, which is able to support Bitcoin’s proof-of-work mechanism and contribute to the network’s long-term security. The acquisition is seen as a strategic move to strengthen NYDIG’s position within the Bitcoin custody, trading, and mining sectors.

Crusoe’s Shift to Artificial Intelligence

Founded in 2018, Crusoe Energy was among the many first U.S. Bitcoin mining firms to harness wasted natural gas to fuel high-performance computing for each crypto mining and AI workloads. Now, the corporate is able to shift gears and give attention to scaling its AI infrastructure.

“We will proceed to channel the identical energy-first mentality towards scaling AI infrastructure and accelerating the adoption and proliferation of AI in our on a regular basis lives,” said Chase Lochmiller, CEO and co-founder of Crusoe.

A Glimpse into the Future

Signs of Crusoe’s transition to AI emerged in 2024, when it announced a multibillion-dollar cope with energy tech firm Lancium to construct a 200-megawatt AI data center in Abilene, Texas. The facility was set to tap into as much as 1.2 gigawatts of fresh power and support GPU clusters designed for AI training and inference at scale.
